What you'll need
A stiff brush, a shop vac or strong vacuum, white vinegar, warm water, a spray bottle and several clean microfiber towels.
Step-by-step
First vacuum thoroughly to remove loose crystals. Mix equal parts warm water and white vinegar, spray the stain lightly, and let it dwell for five minutes so the acid dissolves the salt. Agitate with the brush, then blot with microfiber and extract with a wet vac.
Repeat as needed and finish with a plain-water rinse to remove the vinegar smell. Leave windows cracked so the carpet dries completely and doesn't develop mildew.
When DIY isn't enough
Salt that's been ground in all winter often wicks back up as the carpet dries. Professional hot water extraction flushes salt out of the padding, not just the surface, which is why it's part of our spring interior detail.
Prevention
Rubber all-weather floor liners with raised edges are the best defense. Shake them out weekly during the winter.
