Why winter washing matters
Salt and brine from MassDOT and town plow trucks cling to lower panels, wheel wells and the undercarriage. Washing during the winter, not just after it, stops that salt from sitting on metal for months.
Choosing the right day
Look for a dry, sunny afternoon around 35–45°F. Water freezes quickly below freezing, which can lock doors, freeze mirrors and leave ice on the paint.
Preventing frozen doors and locks
Blow out or towel-dry door jambs, rubber seals and fuel doors. A silicone or rubber conditioner on seals prevents them from sticking.
When to go professional
If you live in a condo or apartment in Boston, Somerville or Cambridge without a hose, a mobile detailer with heated water and onboard tanks can wash safely on mild winter days.
